Kelly Hawthorne

What is your hometown?
Country Club Hills, IL

What are your interests/hobbies?
I’m a lover of film, dance and travel.

What are your favorite Chicago activities?
In the summer I love picnics on the lake, and in the colder months, I’m all about the theater scene. There is always something to do and interesting people to meet.

Did you work full time through the program?
I worked full time and found it to be a reasonable time commitment.

Was time commitment reasonable?
I have to admit that there was one particularly rough quarter, but that’s when it’s really important to be in tune with yourself and your limits.

Were you able to balance work and school?
The balancing act is way more manageable when you keep a supportive network around!

Professionally, what are you doing now?
I manage my organization’s medical advisory board, as well as oversee our Annual Medical Review process. I love that I get to work with clinicians who truly love what they do and care about the patient more than their own biases.

Tell us about a “Northwestern moment.” More specifically, was there a moment either in class or otherwise associated with the program where something really clicked for you?
Collaboration is key. Every week, you’re sitting in a room with dozens of other people that share the same passions and desires and there’s so much to learn from everyone. You’d be remiss not to take advantage of that and only “stick” to one side of the room.

How has the program changed the way you view healthcare?
I wouldn’t say that my view of healthcare has changed, but my view on what I can do about it has. I feel more empowered to take on certain challenges and help improve our system.
